Drum lighting is lighting designed to illuminate a drum or cymbal at night. The effect created by the lighting can be quite hypnotic. The basic concept of lighting a drum is to produce a shadow that illuminates the entire area in front of the drum, whereas a spotlight illuminates only the front of the drum. Sometimes these lights are referred to as disc lighting. Basically, any light source can be used in a drum lighting system.
Another common name for drum lighting is gleeve lighting, strobe lighting, and spotlight lighting. Strobe lighting uses a series of lights aimed in a downward motion, strobe lighting is used when light is needed to shine directly on the drum either to create an effect or for visual effect. All three names are used to refer to the same thing. Gleeve, strobe, and spotlight are all interchangeable with strobe lights mounted above the drum.
Drum lighting systems generally consist of a drum, stand, and lighting. The stand is placed on top of the drum, and a ceiling fixture, usually a fluorescent tube type fixture, is suspended from the ceiling above the drum. This fixture emits light from underneath the drum through its tube. This drum lighting system produces all of the light that the drum would normally produce during the day.
One drawback of drum lighting systems is that the lights are concentrated above the drum, therefore they do not illuminate the entire area the way they would if they were mounted on the drum itself. Some people find this makes the drum seem smaller than it actually is. Another disadvantage is that you cannot adjust the intensity of the lights so you must either add more lights to make the drum appear larger or reduce the intensity of the lights below the drum so that the entire drum appears brighter.
The majority of drum lighting systems come with some type of adjustable fixture that allows you to choose different levels of brightness for the drum. If the drum is very bright then you can increase the level of brightness; if it is very dim then you can reduce the brightness. When installing the lights for the drum you will need to make sure that there are no protruding nails or sharp things sticking out on the side of the drum. You should also check the wiring to make sure that the lights are not leaking anywhere.
The most common size of drum lighting system that people use is a twelve-foot drum. These drums are typically used in music that is faster or has a beat. A twelve-foot drum is usually bright enough so that you can see clearly even with the lighting system installed. If you are using a drum light with the intention of using the drum as part of a sound system then you should invest in one that has a brighter light bulb than the ones found on most portable drums.
